Envision a Supportive Learning Community

Introduction

In The Illustrated Guide to Visible Learning: An Introduction to What Works Best In Schools (Hattie, J., et al, 2024), the authors identify a Sense of Belonging of students and staff as one of eleven evidence-based  practices that “work best in schools,” based on 25 years of research.  The authors describe a framework comprising 12 aspects of a Sense of Belonging intrinsic to a well-designed and functioning school climate, where students and staff feel welcomed, supported, and valued.

A supportive school climate is foundational to developing the Sense of Belonging, and to prevent bullying. Effective bullying prevention efforts are essentially comprehensive school climate reform efforts that engage students, families, school personnel, and community members working together as partners.  Collaborating, they can envision and work toward their safe and supportive learning environment.

Teaching kindness and engaging these partners through the arts has potential to build a positive learning community and prevent bullying. Reducing identity-based bullying, and increasing the use of anti-bias curricula and training programs, along with creating safe spaces and wellness centers, facilitate a welcoming and supportive environment. Providing counseling or other services for all students (including bystanders) involved in a bullying incident is critical to healing, learning, and  mitigating the effects of the incident.
